Slay the Spire 2 update: what's coming next?
Slay the Spire 2’s roadmap: alternate Acts and a new character
Mega Crit co-founder Casey Yano says the studio has already started work on “alternate versions” of Acts 2 and 3, along with development on a new character—however, players shouldn’t expect those changes soon.
Yano’s comments frame the effort as part of Slay the Spire 2’s longer-term expansion plan rather than an immediate follow-up to its recent churn of balance and content adjustments. That matters because the game has been in the spotlight for both its live tweaking and community backlash: Steam reviews have dipped after updates triggered review-bombing, and the game’s direction has been the subject of intense player debate.
The key takeaway is timing and scope. The alternate Act work suggests the next wave won’t just be small numbers tuning or additional cards, but instead structural variety in major progression segments. Acts 2 and 3 are later-game milestones, so changing those portions could meaningfully alter run pacing and deck-building priorities, not just add side content.
Meanwhile, a new character typically implies a bigger design pipeline—unique mechanics, balance targets, art/animation, and a larger ecosystem of synergies and counters. Even if Mega Crit has begun internal production, Yano’s warning “don’t expect them any time soon” indicates a schedule longer than the near-term patch cycle.
For players, that means the short-term future likely remains focused on incremental updates, while the longer-term roadmap points toward deeper rerouting of the campaign experience and fresh character options. It also suggests Mega Crit is planning for variety and replayability beyond pure card/balance iterations, even as it continues responding to player feedback in the meantime.
