Why are Pokémon Winds and Waves Switch 2 exclusive?
What was announced
During Pokémon’s 30th‑anniversary Presents broadcast, the franchise’s next mainline pair — Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves — were officially revealed. Nintendo and The Pokémon Company confirmed both titles are being developed for the Nintendo Switch 2 and will not release on the original Switch.
What we know and why it matters
The games are billed as Generation 10 and are set to arrive in 2027. The trailer and follow‑up coverage show open‑world elements and underwater sequences, plus three new starter Pokémon that were revealed during the showcase. Because the publisher has stated the titles are exclusive to the Switch 2, players on the original Switch will not be able to buy or play these entries on that hardware.
This exclusivity matters for a few reasons:
- Hardware requirements: developers are increasingly targeting more powerful, modern hardware; Switch 2 exclusivity signals the new games use features or performance not feasible on the original console.
- Install base and timing: the move forces fans who want to play the next mainline instalment at launch to adopt the newer console, which shapes early sales and adoption of Switch 2.
- Development focus: making the games Switch 2‑only lets Game Freak and partners concentrate on one platform’s tools and performance, which can shorten technical constraints during development.
What remains unclear
Specific technical reasons for the exclusivity, such as exact engine demands or features that rely on Switch 2 hardware, weren’t broken down in detail. Nintendo did confirm the games will arrive in 2027 and that the reveal capped a big anniversary showcase, so fans have a long lead time before launch to plan whether to upgrade hardware.
