NASA’s recent practice countdown for its long-delayed Artemis II mission ran into trouble when ground teams detected leaks while attempting to load cryogenic propellants into the Space Launch System (SLS) at Kennedy Space Center. The SLS requires an enormous amount of supercold liquid hydrogen and oxygen — roughly hundreds of thousands of gallons — and the fuels must be transferred and sealed at very low temperatures. During the first wet dress rehearsal, hydrogen leaks emerged from the rocket’s fueling plumbing, forcing teams to halt the countdown and drain the vehicle.
Engineers traced the interruption to multiple points in the fuel-handling system where seals, valves or fittings failed to remain tight when exposed to the extreme cold and the stresses of the full-propellant flow. Fixing such leaks is difficult because components contract and behave differently at cryogenic temperatures; even small gaps can let gaseous hydrogen escape and trigger unsafe conditions.
