Why was there no MSG watch party Game 3?
No watch party outside MSG because of Trump security
New York City’s Knicks Game 3 homecoming at Madison Square Garden will still be a spectacle, but fans looking for a rally outside the arena won’t get one this time.
NYPD officials canceled the Knicks’ popular watch party plans outside MSG for Monday night’s Game 3, citing heightened security tied to President Donald Trump’s attendance. The decision means the “outside” event won’t proceed, even though the Knicks are returning to MSG for their first NBA Finals home game since 1999.
That matters for two reasons:
- Game-day atmosphere shifts indoors. With the watch-party element removed from the streets around the arena, more fans who would normally gather outside are expected to stay focused on MSG itself or alternative viewing options.
- Security logistics drive local sports rituals. The Knicks’ finals experience has already been notable for the attention drawn to New York’s basketball culture, including other watch-party activity earlier in the Finals. This cancellation shows how the presence of major political figures can directly affect public sports traditions.
In the broader Finals context, the Knicks are 2–0 against the San Antonio Spurs entering Game 3, and the home crowd expectation is high. But whether the city’s streets are part of that celebration depends on whether the next games involve similar security constraints.
